In Costa Rica, modern is the equivalent of what most gringos would consider to be the bare minimum. Which means I had no stove, no fridge, and no hot water. And for the first five months I slept on the floor, on a mattress of course. After furnishing my home with the essentials like picnic cooler, grill, and organic mango-wood dining table, my wallet was left a little thin. I didn't have extra cash for luxuries, like mirrors.
I realized my image should come from the inside, from what I create. The more we collect things to match our ever-changing self-image, the more we end up throwing away. Clogging every corner of the attic, and the planet, with piles of old shoes, rusty tools, and more junk.
PS. If you try this at home, it helps to have a roommate that can point out missed buttons and offensive bed-hair.
Next week let's get back to basics and talk about the deal on dirt.
Pura Vida!!
